Eve Kaplan
Eve is a seventh grade student at windward and is really interested in food deserts because they relate to so many different parts of a person's life. Food deserts relate to health, ethnicity, income, age and more. Food deserts seem like a small issue but once Eve started really learning about food deserts, Eve realized the only small thing about them was the lack of access to healthy food. There are a lot of solutions on the internet for food deserts but none of them seem to be working. Eve said she thought her group will be able to think from a new angle and find a different approach since they are considerably younger than most of the creators of the other solutions. You can contact Eve at [email protected] and she would be happy to answer any questions or make clarifications on her organizations website.
Ila
Ila is passionate about food deserts because it connects to many other problems like obesity and hunger. Ila wants to help give low income people a chance at a healthier life by replacing fast food chains with fresh food. Ila and her teammates will accomplish this by collecting food that is unsold by farmers and grocery stores. Then sell them at a lower cost to people in food desert areas. Doing this will lower the amount of health problems caused by fast food and help reduce food waste. Ila hopes to make a change and help people in poverty. Contact her at [email protected]
Josie
Hello! My name is Josie, I'm a 13 year old student at Windward. The topic of food deserts interested me because I think that everyone deserves access to good and healthy food. Even though me and my teammates are young, we still can make a change. The community we are trying to help is everyone inside the food deserts. Our idea is to create a farmers market for only ugly foods that were going to be thrown out helping food waste. Since these foods are the unbought runts they would be sold at a cheaper price allowing these people in food deserts to purchase healthier, more nutritious food. If you have any questions we encourage you to ask them just send them over to this email: [email protected]
